I just want to ask the clever colour people out there is it possible to get blue from two chocolate parent cats.  My council has asked me to DNA test my stud cat Merchucchio to get correct colour.  I recently tried to register Henny Penny (Blue/cream torti & White) but they say it is impossible to get blue from Merc - Chocolate Spotted Tabby & White and Coco Chanel - Chocolate/cream torti mink.  They suspect Merchucchio is a black/silver & White.  He certainly looks chocolate to me but I know when there is silver in there it can play havoc with colours.  Do chocolates not carry blue? Coco Chanel's mother is a blue torti. Anyway, I will DNA test Merchucchio and see what I get.

Yes, interesting there must be alot in incorrect registering here in Australia. I feel the Dam Coco Chanel must be a seal tortie mink and not choc torti mink. I am sure Merchucchio the stud boy is a choc spotted tabby & white, his Mum the same and his Sire a Choc Point. I will get Coco Chanel No.5 DNA tested so I can finally get my pedigree papers for Ms Henny Penny the blue torti girl. I must say I have had alot of gorgeous lilac kittens and chocs - it's just that the delightfully eccentric Ms Henny Penny has thrown a spanner in the works!!! lol

Can somebody please point me to his pedigree so I can see if I can help? Yes, chocolate cats can definitely carry blue. But from 2 choc cats you can get only choc and lilac offspring. Maybe Merc's chocolatepoint parent is really sealpoint? And yes, Brown Tabby is genetically Black Tabby. Colour on Aussie pedigrees are generally a nightmare because so many registries there don't register on genotype, and so many breeders don't know their genetics and so register incorrectly.

Just looking at the pedigree... Merc's parents are chocolate point and choc spotted / white so he could not be black tabby, could he? I get very confused with the chocolate/brown thing. Especially when it comes to tabbies.
And it makes it harder when pedigrees have both brown tabby and choc tabby listed. Because isn't brown tabby actually black tabby? I don't know and I have probably confused you more.
LOL
Just for interest Karolyn, could you send her pedigree to me please? madcap -at- orcon.net.nz. It's marvellous now that we can DNA test and finally get colours sorted. I agree that Coco Chanel is likely to be the wrongly-registered one here, but sometimes the mistakes go back generations, some registries won't correct the colours unless *each of the original breeders* applies, and it can become a total nightmare getting it corrected.

I hope that nowadays, registries will accept DNA results to correct a cat's colour, even if they can't correct the ancestors. Will be interesting to see. Has anyone any experience of this happening?

Hi Pam, yes I will send the pedigree of Coco Chanel no.5. I see what you mean. It's an old pedigree too so that could be a nightmare. Many thanks for that.
Hi Pam

Yes, here in the UK the GCCF will accept DNA testing to correct colour regardless of how the cats have been registered in the past.

Thanks Ann, good to know, and great to see commonsense prevailing.
